I was under to impression that hybrids could park for free at meters in Santa Monica, so I was surprised when I was ticketed recently. I assumed the attendant had made a mistake, but then discovered the fine print:
"Hybrid not exempt w/o decals"
Anyway, I thought some of you might want to know this so you can learn from my mistakes. Do you know where to go to get the California decals? And can I tell you just how annoying this is? Hello, it's a hybrid -- why do I have to get decals to prove it? Argggh! This is silly.

Fri, May 12, 2006 - 11:38 AMYup, that's also true for driving hybrid vehicles in carpool lanes in California. And not all hybrids qualify; the vehicle must be rated as a SULEV with 45MPG or better gas mileage.
